Wesley Wayne Bullock PhD
Wesley Wayne Bullock, age 71, passed away April 28th, 2009 in his home in Sherwood, OR after a courageous 5 year battle with cancer. Wes was born in Tacoma, WA on Feb. 19, 1938 to Wayne and Roberta Bullock. He moved to Oregon when he was a young boy and graduated from Vestal Grade School. He attended Washington High where he met his wife of 51 years. Wes served in the Army Reserve for nine years while working and attending Portland State University. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1964. Wes loved learning and continued on to receive a PhD from OHSU in Microbiology, Immunology in 1971. He completed his Post Doctorate at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Wed spent many years doing research and/or teaching at La Roche, Harvard, Baylor and finally retired as Professor Emeritus from OHSU after 20 years. Many awards, including several Outstanding Teacher of the year awards were granted to Wes.
Wes served in the Coast Guard Reserves for 15 years teaching sailing and weather classes. He loved his sail boat and spent vacations with his wife sailing; including a two month trip to the San Juan Islands. Wes was also an amazing artist at a very early age. He painted, did wood carvings, turned just about everything into a sculpture, and over the last few years, fell in love with casting bronze and creating metal sculptures. He received several awards for his artwork and has one of his sculptures, “Family” on permanent display in Wilsonville. Magic was another of Wes’ accomplishments. He continually entertained all children with his card tricks. His grand kids are still trying to figure out how Boompa (as they call him) always made the salt shaker disappear in restaurants. Over the last, very difficult couple of months, his sister Marva and her husband Ron were always there for the family. We also want to give special thanks to the Angels of 7 North at Portland Providence Cancer Tower. We all loved him and will miss him. He is a great husband, daddy, Boompa and friend.
Wes is survived by wife, Shirley; children, Laura and husband Steve, Robbie and husband Mike, and Barbara; many wonderful grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, siblings Marva and husband Ron, Jeff and wife Judie, and Amy; extended family and friends and dog, Tags. He will be greatly missed as he sails away. Fight Cancer not war!
