Margaret May Navert Phillips

July 26, 1915 to August 28, 2009

Margaret was born to Harry and Margaret Navert in Mount Vernon, WA.  She graduated from Mt. Vernon High in 1934, married Keith Phillips in 1937 and they moved to their home in Lyons in 1939. Margaret was a homemaker, chick sexer, dairy farmer and most notably owner/operator of the Lyons Variety store through the 1970’s.

Margaret is survived by her sons Jim of Roseburg and John of Oakton, VA; daughter Willow of Hawthorne, NV; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.  She is preceded in death by her spouse of 50 years, Keith Raymond; sister Ruby I. Abbott; brother John; and her parents Harry and Margaret.

A Memorial Service was held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 1 at Mehama Community Church in Mehama, OR, where Margaret was a member for more than 70 years.  Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center Salem.

Cornelia Boyd

Cornelia BoydCornelia Boyd, cherished mother, grandmother and friend, passed away at age 91 on Friday, August 28, 2009. Born in Malvern, Arkansas, to Lamberth and Virginia Pearson. Beloved wife of the late Leo Sorensen and the late Morris Boyd.  Adored mother of Sandra Burnett, Clark Boyd, Rebecca Boyd, and the late Richard Boyd. Cherished grandmother of Alex, Joanna, Vanessa and Andy, and great-grandmother to Annabelle, Laurel and Oliver. Loving mother-in-law of Jennifer Boyd, and grandmother-in-law to Jen, Brad and Jade.

 Her kind nature, generosity and wisdom will always touch the lives of her family and friends. Cornelia was a member of Community Lutheran Church of Las Vegas, Mesquite Federated Women’s Club, Assistance League, and her bridge club. Gilbert “GilT” Thoming

Gilbert “GilT” Thoming died peacefully at the age of 87 on Aug 24, 2009 in Portland. He was born September 4, 1921 in Mitchell, SD to parents C. George and Clara Thoming. He was married to Margie Thoming for 58 years. She passed away in 2006.

Gil graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland and attended OSU in Corvallis. He served with the 9th Army Air Corp. and was stationed in Western Europe during WWII. He also worked as a truck driver of Pacific Meat Co.

He is survived by his children Barbara and Jim Bradshaw, Beverly Conklin and Bette Winkle, his six grandchildren, their spouses and 12 great- grandchildren. They all love and miss “Big Papa.” He is also survived by brother, Gene Thoming

A Celebration of his life will be held Friday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in NE Portland, 5431 NE 20th Ave., Portland (20th and Killingsworth).

Janet Brown

Newberg resident, Janet Brown, 87, died on August 23, 2009.  Janet was born on August 8, 1922 in Centralia, Washington, to Ethel and Sidney Brown.  She was raised in Burbank and Glendale, California, and attended high school in Burbank.  She was a member of the Sixth Ferrying group in Long Beach, CA, and was a stewardess for United Airlines.  In 1953, Janet married Gary Lehman, and she began working as a passenger agent for United Airlines.  Janet later worked as a Real Estate Agent in Newport Beach for 20 years.  A few of Janet’s interests in life include writing, painting, watching the TV series MASH, and spending time with her family and her dog, Letty.   She was a member of Clipped Wings, United Airlines Stewardess Alumnae and Flight Attendants Inc.

 Janet is survived by her daughter, Sydney Lehman Steen and husband, Charles, of Newberg; brother, Keith Brown and wife, Dorothy, of Bend; many cousins, nieces and nephews, grandson, Forrest, and her dog, Letty.  She is preceded in death by her son, Andrew Hill Lehman (2007); former husband, Gary Lehman (1997); and borther, Marbury Brown (1997).  A memorial service is pending, and will be held in Southern California.    Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center, Tualatin.

Phyllis Asbury Frost

Phyllis Frost photo            Phyllis Asbury was born in Ismay, Montana March 24th, 1928.  Aged 81, she passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on August 17th.  She was the daughter of Elmo Franklin and Kathleen Asbury, cattle ranchers in Tee Dee, Montana. 

Phyllis and her family endured a number of hardships including droughts, The Depression, serious illnesses and the unexpected loss of her father at age 13.  So that Phyllis could attend high school, the family (Phyllis, her younger brother Ben, and her mother “Kate”) moved to Ekalaka, Montana.  Phyllis was the Valedictorian of her high school class and received a scholarship to Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.  She graduated from there in 1949, having majored in Sociology with elective courses in Psychology and Religion.  She married Calvin Van Pelt the summer of 1949.  She was always very involved with children; at home, teaching Sunday School and helping out with the Cub Scouts.  Phyllis and Cal were married for 25 years.

            When her children left home to pursue higher education, Phyllis entered the workforce and completed 15 years with Tektronix until her retirement.  She was married to Bill Frost for 25 years until his death in 2005.

            Phyllis is survived by her daughter Nita Van Pelt and her sons Ken (Karey) Van Pelt, Paul (Katrina) Van Pelt, and Lawrence (Linda) Van Pelt; her grandchildren Blair Van Pelt, Ana Van Pelt and Kellen Van Pelt; her step-children Susan Frost and Doug Frost; her step-grandchildren Caedron Frost, Jenny Bounds and Phillip Bounds; 2 step-great-grandchildren; her very special friend Dave Pearson and family friend Sue AuWerter.

            The family thanks the wonderful people at Kaiser Oncology and Hospice, No Worries, and Legacy Hopewell House for their loving and compassionate care for our Mom.

            Phyllis was a member of First Congregational Church for nearly 60 years.  A Memorial Service for Phyllis will take place at First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Ave. in Portland on Tuesday August 25th at 2:00 p.m.  It is the wish of Phyllis that any gifts or donations made in her name should be given to First Congregational Church.  Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center, Tualatin.

Steve R. Canfield

 Steve’s horrible battle with kidney cancer has ended. His suffering is over, and he now walks with Jesus and his loved ones that preceded him. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, on 02/22/47 to Roland and Mary Canfield. Steve served his country for five years in the Air Force. He graduated with honors from the University of Maryland in Heidelberg, Germany. Steve had a career in electronics and computer programming as a senior analyst. He was a fantastic artist, singer, and guitar player. Steve was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and always put his family first; He was our hero. He loved to write, read, (esp. nautical stories), fish, camp, and go boating. He was a strong man of faith who lived for Jesus. Steve is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sharla, daughters Amanda and Stephanie, father Roland, and brothers Monte and Scott. He was preceded in death by his brother Corey, son Jason, and his mother Mary. He was loved by all and will truly be missed. He’s remembered for his quiet strength, courage, and love for his family.  Services held at Silverton Assembly of God on 08/21/09 at 2 pm.

Anna “Ann” Louise Fausett

Anna “Ann” Louise Fausett, 91, died on August 13, 2009 in Forest Grove, Oregon.  Anna was born on February 15, 1918 to Jack and Alma Mackey.  She was raised in Astoria, Oregon and attended Astoria High School where she was salutatorian.  She married Marvin Fausett in 1942 and the couple had 3 sons, Gary, Kirk and Lowell.  Ann worked primarily as a homemaker, and was very involved with her church, Peace Lutheran Church in Astoria.  Ann loved to spend time with her family and to celebrate her Native Scandinavian heritage.  Cooking and gardening were a couple of her favorite hobbies. 

 Ann is survived by her husband, Marvin Fausett; sons Gary Fausett and partner Peter Jepsen of Newton, Massachussettes, Kirk Fausett and wife Wendy of Astoria, Lowell Fausett and wife Helen of Corvallis; sisters, Gertrude Nudell of Astoria and Irene Lewis of California; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her 3 brothers, Henry, Hugo and Homer Mackey.

Arden Bert Searls, Jr.

Arden Bert Searls, Jr., died on August 13, 2009 at his home in Brush Prairie, Washington.  Arden was born on July 8, 1938 in Coeur d’alene, Idaho.  He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and worked several years as a Pile Bucker, working on highways and bridges, including the Astoria Bridge.  Arden lived in Astoria for about 10 years, and has more recently moved to the Vancouver area.  He has also resided in Arizona, Moses Lake, Boise and Coeur d’alene.  Arden was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of the American Legion Post #12 in Astoria.  He was fondly known as “Spud”.

 Arden is survived by his son Kevin Searls of Colville, WA, Randy Searls of Colville, WA; daughters Jeannie of Yakima, WA, Roma Mullin and spouse Erinn of Portland, Tiffany Hendrickson of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Michael Searls of Astoria; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  Arden is preceded in death by his brother, Carl and sister, Stardust.  Arden was a beloved Brother, Uncle, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Edna Pearson

Edna Pearson Edna Pearson died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 of Alzheimer’s disease at Cedar Crest Alzheimer’s facility, where she resided for the past three years.  She had just turned 82 years old.

 Edna was born in Dayton, Washington on July 5, 1927 to Arzee and Ethel Kenworthy.  The family moved to North Powder, Oregon when Edna was in grade school.  She graduated from North Powder High School where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Henry ‘Pete’ Pearson.  They were married on June 26, 1950 and moved to Baker City.  She lived in Baker City until moving to Tualatin in 2006.

 Edna and Pete owned a plumbing business where Edna was the bookkeeper and office administrator. She also was a homemaker and mother of three.  Edna was very involved in her children’s activities, she was a Boy Scout den mom, Girl Scout leader, room mother and always willing to help out with the various activities that her children were involved in.   She enjoyed being a member of the VFW Auxiliary. 

 Her hobbies included hunting deer and elk with Pete, accompanying him around the western United States trap shooting, reading, canning a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and playing bridge.  Highlights of their lives were trips to the Wallowa Mountains lake basin with horses and traveling the Alaska Inland Passage sightseeing and fishing for king salmon.

 Edna is survived by her three children, Frank Pearson (Chloe) of Milwaukie, OR;  Terry Pearson (Lynda) of Baker City, OR;  Ann Pearson McGranahan (Tom) of Wilsonville, OR and by one brother, Merle Kenworthy, Baker City, OR.  She also has five grandchildren, Benji Pearson Henslee, Peter Pearson, Bryan Pearson, Shawn McGranahan, Kelly McGranahan Bretl and six great children ranging in ages 13 to 5 – Jessica, Chelsea, and Caydan Henslee, Andrew, Ashlynn, and Alec Pearson. 

 After 50 plus years of marriage her husband, Pete preceded her in death in 2003 as well as four sisters and one brother.

 A memorial service will be held at North Powder Cemetery on Saturday, September 12, at 1:00 pm.  A reception will follow at the North Powder Grange Hall.  Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center, Tualatin.

Paul Edward Brockmeier

Paul Edward Brockmeier was born October 24, 1930 in Portland, Oregon to Charles and Ethel Brockmeier. He died August 5, 2009 in Lake Oswego, Oregon with his family by his side.

 Paul graduated from OSU in Forestry and was a basketball Manger at Oregon State. In 1955, Paul married Suzanne Williams in Port Townsend.  They settled in Lake Oswego in 1977. Paul served his country in the US Army; he was stationed in Europe while in the Army. He had a 40 year career with Crown Zellerbach Paper Corporation, and was located between Washington, Louisiana, California, and Oregon.

 Paul enjoyed Tennis and was a member of the US Tennis Association. He and his partner won first place in doubles for the Portland Public Parks in 1997. He was active in the Presbyterian Church and was one of the Elders in the church.

 Paul is Survived by his wife Suzanne, son James Ashley, daughter Laura Eldredge, granddaughters Ashley and Brittany Eldridge, sister Delight Goodwin, nephews Alan, David, and John Brockmeier, nieces Margaret Wetter ling and Jeanne Schultz. He was preceded by his brother Glenn Charles Brockmeier.

Robert Larson Freeman

Robert Larson Freeman, 68, died on August 1, 2009 in Beaverton, Oregon.  Robert was born to Marjorie and John Freeman on September 15, 1940, in Spokane, WA.  He travelled a lot as a child while his father was a minister, and attended high school in Lyons, Wisconsin.  At the age of 17, Robert went into the Navy, and following the Navy, he moved to Tigard to be near his family.  He began working construction in the Tigard area, and in 1964, he married Barbara Bergmann and the couple had 3 children.  Some of Robert’s interests included boating, trains, the outdoors, camping, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.  He had an active imagination and was very inquisitive about machinery.  Since 2000, Robert has been happily devoted to his companion, Nancy Sumpter.
