Daryl Roland

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Daryl RolandThere is much to remember and much to be thankful for as we remember Daryl and the way he shared his life with those around him.

He was born on Dec 24, 1919 and died Nov  25, 2009 in Gladstone, Oregon.  Daryl was born in Cozad, Nebraska. He grew up in the Ozark Hills of Missouri until the age of 12.  His family then moved around from Pomona, Ca.,  back to Missouri, and then out west to Ontario, Oregon.

After grad from HS –Daryl worked on farms and ranches around Ontario.  In 1940 he married Ara Mc Daniel and they both attended college at Walla Walla.  Daryl went into the Navy during WWII.  He did basic training in Washington, and served as a lab technician in San Diego and Puerto Rico.    Daryl went back to school and graduated.  Though Daryl had worked on the farm and sold insurance, he worked most of his life as a lab technician in Southern California.

 Daryl and Ara had two boys, Larry and David.  They raised the boys around Ontario, to Woodland, CA, and then Loma Linda, CA.  Family was everything to Daryl.  He wife was the love of his life.  He told me often how proud he was of his boys.  Daryl and Ara have 5 grandchildren; Kristen, Andrew, Hugh, Louise, and Jordan.

 Daryl was deeply involved in his church and a lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  He lived his life the way he believed.  Daryl’s calling was to be kind, friendly, and help others. Daryl never met a stranger.  He could talk to anyone and make them his friend. Daryl was an avid rock hound.  He loved hunting for rocks and then polishing them.  Daryl could fix anything from fixing/building a car to repairing homes.  Another of his hobbies was horses.

Daryl and Ara retired and moved to Oregon in 1989.  Their goal was to be by Larry and help with his kids. Daryl and Ara watched all three of Larry’s kids before school and after until one of the parents could pick them up.   Many times I would come to pick up Jordan, and find Daryl and Jordan in the shop.  He would be teaching her how to polish rocks, making arrowheads, or they would be playing school with Jordan being the teacher. Daryl loved to take Andrew fishing.  Today I think fishing is Andrews’s main hobby do to Daryl.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Ara Roland in Gladstone, OR.  His sons Larry Roland of Lake Oswego, OR  and David Roland of Rancho Santa Fe, CA  and his two brothers Cyril Roland and Theodore Roland both of Payette, Id.

El Señor es mi Pastor; nada me faltará.  En lugares de delicados pastos mehará descansar;

junto a aguas de reposo me pastoreará.  Confortará mi alma;

me guiará por sendas de justicia por amor de su nombre.

Aunque ande en valle de sombra demuerte,

no temeré mal alguno, porque Tú estarás conmigo;

tu vara y tu cayado me infundirán aliento.

Prepararas mesa delante de mí en presencia de mis angustiadores;

unges mi cabeza con aceite;

Ciertamente el bien y la misericordia me seguirán todos los días de mi vida,

Margaret LaVerne Bertsch

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

img-091106210334Maggie passed away after a lengthy illness on November 5th, at home with her family by her side.  She was born March 21, 1932, in Stratford, South Dakota, to Mary (Reilly) and Earl Saunders, and grew up with her siblings, Tom and Jim.  She graduated from Mt. Marty College and went to work for the FBI.

Maggie married Jim Bertsch of Conde, SD in 1956 in Abredeen SD, and started a wonderful family. On New Year’s Eve 1979, the family moved from South Dakota to Oregon, where she and Jim began new adventures, selling insurance together and making a home in the Salem area.

In later years, Maggie loved antiquing, collecting her beloved Hershey’s memorabilia and always with eternal hope, she never passed up a lottery machine without taking a small gamble.  She looked forward to hearing about all her grandchildren’s sports events, recitals, plays or any other activity they were involved in.  For those who lived outside of Oregon, she eagerly awaited their phone calls and made sure she was a part of their lives. Margaret’s failing health in the last few years prevented her from seeing her grandchildren in their activities, but they always knew she was there in spirit.

Margaret took the good with the bad in life with grace and humor.  She liked a good joke and had incredible comedic timing.  Maggie was a strong woman who remained committed to her faith and family through the end. When Margaret was in the hospital earlier this year, her family asked her what her wishes were upon leaving and she replied she’d like to go home.  Her family knows she now got her wish, and is finally at peace.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jim, her children: Georgine (Jeff) Naggatz, Gulf Breeze, FL; Mike (Cindy) Bertsch, Warner, SD.; Mary (Tim) Massey, Beaverton, OR; Patrick (Chrissie) Bertsch, Salem, OR; Jamie Bertsch, Salem , OR; and Melissa (Phil) Smith of Spanaway, WA and her16 grandchildren: Dr. Kaitlin Ross, Brittany and Kelsea Naggatz; Michael, Brandon, Andrew, and Evan Bertsch; Martie, Ireland, Grace and Zoe Massey; Reilly, Madison, and Jacob Bertsch; Jordan Collmann; and Megan Smith; and bother Tom (Phyllis) Saunders, Aberdeen SD. Maggie was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Earl and her brother Jim Saunders.

 A viewing will be held Tuesday November 10th at Crown Memorial Center, Salem OR, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  A Funeral Mass and Rosary will be held at St. Vincent Catholic Church at 10:30 am on Wednesday November 11th, with a reception to follow.
