Clarissa Norton Carter

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Clarissa Carter, 94, passed away at her Beaverton residencClarissa_Carter_1e on Jan. 16, 2010.

Her long life took her from a childhood in a small Pennsylvania farming community to living in New York City during the Great Depression to eventually settling in Oregon, where she lived for six decades.

Born to Albert and Catherine Norton in 1915 in Dalton, Pa., Claire, her sister and four brothers grew up on a dairy farm in nearby Herrick Township.  Her early years were spent riding in the family’s horse-drawn wagon and living without electricity or the convenience of modern appliances.  Those experiences doubtless contributed to her lifelong practicality and work ethic.

A good student who liked to attend school dances and box socials, Claire met her future husband, Elwood William (“Nick”) Carter, when she was 16.  They were wed five years later and lived in New York City and Arlington, Va. in the early years of their marriage.  As Nick took increasingly responsible positions with the Great Northern Railroad, they made many moves around the country, finally settling in Klamath Falls, Ore.   While Claire’s primary focus was caring for her family, she was a frequent volunteer for the March of Dimes and American Red Cross and a member of the local garden club.  Nick and Claire were married for 50 years before his death in 1987.  She moved to Beaverton in 1995 to be near her children and grandchildren.

Claire is survived by her sons, Jeffrey and Christopher, their wives, Dee Ann and Nancy, and four grandchildren, Erik, Sally, Jennifer and Andrew.  A simple memorial gathering will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 23 at Hearthstone of Beaverton, 12520 SW Hart Road.  Remembrances may be made to the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.      Online condolences may be sent to www.ANewTradition.com.  Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Tualatin.

Born on August 9, 1950 in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of George “Gene” and Cynthia (Chrizio) Jeanfaivre, the family moved to Southern California in 1955. Wyatt graduated from Van Nuys High School and was attending Pierce College when his education was interrupted by the draft. He was stationed in Germany where he earned the sharpshooter designation and came to Oregon shortly after discharge.

Wyatt was able to complete one of his lifelong ambitions by building a new home there, which he and Patti moved into just one short year ago.

Wyatt worked in the construction trades for over 35 years and was an extremely skilled craftsman. He worked primarily in residential construction, but as a journeyman carpenter was able to advance his abilities working on several large commercial projects. At the time of his death he was employed by Arbor Homes of Portland as a field superintendent, a position he truly loved and considered his dream job.

In addition to his woodworking hobbies, Wyatt loved the outdoors. Whether it be camping, fishing, or hiking he enjoyed communing with God in a natural setting and was looking forward to showing his grandson the wonders of nature. Eileen Ross

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Eileen Ross (Taragos) was born on May 24, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Taragos.  She grew up on the Northeast side of Minneapolis in a family of seven children with its roots in the Carpathian Mountains of Slovakia / Poland / Ukraine. Education was highly valued in Eileen’s family, and many of her siblings went on to get college and even graduate degrees.  Eileen earned a B.A. from The University of Pittsburgh and completed coursework for a M.A. in Education (all funded by the GI Bill—Eileen served during World War II in the United States Navy).

Eileen started her family of two sons and one daughter in 1951. Her children were all born in Michigan, where the family lived until relocating to Pennsylvania in 1958. Eileen and her family lived in a suburb outside of Philadelphia on the campus of Bryn Mawr College where her former husband, Bernard Ross, was a professor and later a dean.  In 1978 Eileen moved with her husband to Portland where Mr. Ross was an administrator at Portland State University.

As her children got older, Eileen worked in childcare and early childhood education, and as a junior high school library assistant.  She has always had a strong affection for children’s literature, and her love of reading a wide variety of books has afforded her a broad range of knowledge. In addition to being an avid reader, Eileen loved films of all kinds, especially international ones.  For many years she faithfully attended the Portland Film Festival.  She had a passion for art history and politics as well, and enjoyed classical music, especially Chopin, Debussy, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky.

As people got to know Eileen, they found she was a sharp observer of the passing scene, and didn’t lack for opinions, most of which were expressed in her wry sense of humor.

She spent her last few days with her three children. She is survived by her sons, Marc and Jonathan, her daughter, Natalie, her grandchildren Elias and Hallie, her sisters, Peg Eckberg and Helen Pecore, and many nieces and nephews. Her children would like to thank Kaiser Permanente Hospice staff, Patrick Buono, and Eileen’s niece, Carole Pecore, among others, who aided Eileen and her children through this difficult time.  Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Tualatin.
