Albert Hawkey, 93, passed away on February 19, 2010 in Tigard. Albert was born in 1916 in Wynn, Pennsylvania in coal mining country and he was the 10th child of 12 brothers and sisters. Albert’s father was a coal miner and died in a coal mine when Albert was very young. Albert graduated from High School where he was a standout basketball player and boxer. He lived in Pennsylvania all of his early life until the war broke out and he joined the Army Aircorp.
Albert met Gert, the love of his life, while stationed in Portland and after dating for just 6 weeks they were married and he went off to war. After being at war for several years, he came home a decorated soldier and was ready to raise a family.
Albert fell in love with the Great Northwest and he and Gert settled down and raised their family in the Portland metro area. He was a supervisor at Portland’s largest meat company until he retired. His first love was his family, his dog Rocky, then fishing, playing cards, hunting and working in the yard. He was always very athletic and when he was in his late 70’s, the family wanted to introduce him to a new activity, golfing. He lived on the King City Golf Course and he and his family got together and bought him all the golf equipment and clothes to get him started. He went out one time and played 7 holes. He hit every drive around 180 yards straight down the middle then proceeded to bogey every hole. A feat all golfers would appreciate. After the 7 holes, he stopped and said, “This isn’t so tough, but it is too slow a game”. He quit and went home.
Albert is survived by his 2 children, Barbara and Dan; 7 grandchildren Jennifer, Jay, Eric, Megan, Kent, Trevor and Shayla; 13 great-grandchildren Cade, Ava, Eion, Isabel, Cole, Quinn, Bryn, Isaac, Max, Kaleb, Analee, Kyra and Dane; and many other relatives and friends. He was a strong and proud man who was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 26th, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Crescent Grove Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent at www.ANewTradition.com. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Tualatin.
