Sharon Jane Carroll
Date of birth: October 25 1943
Date of death: January 3 2019
Sharon was born on October 25, 1943 in Douglas, Arizona to Carl Eston Carroll and Mildred Enid Eggers Carroll. She was the only child of Carl “Es” and Mildred. As a little girl, the family moved from Rodeo, New Mexico to Wink, Texas and then to Lufkin, Texas where she spent the majority of her childhood. Every summer her family took long vacations to either family in Missouri or Oregon; creating strong bonds with extended family.
Sharon graduated from Lufkin High School and married her high school sweetheart, Eddie Smelley. She worked in the lab at College Station, while he attended Texas A&M. They had three children, Stephen, Nancy and Adam. She was a lifelong learner and had a thirst for knowledge. Following their divorce in 1977 Sharon relocated to the Pacific NW to pursue employment as well as a supportive family connection.
She was an independent woman who instilled a can do attitude amongst her children and later her grandchildren. Sharon worked in the insurance industry as a benefits specialist across the state of Oregon. Following her early retirement, due to health issues, she took on the challenge of managing the homeowners association at Sunshine Creek Condominiums where she also resided for the remainder of her life. Her most cherished career was as a compassionate care giver to her senile grand dog, Nelson.
Sharon loved the ocean and dreamed of one day living in a lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. She loved reading, music, good food, Bible study, artistic endeavors and family time. Growing up as an only child, she regularly reminded her kids how lucky they were to have each other and to treat each other with respect.
Sharon was intentional to get to know her family and learn about the things that were of interest to them—like subscribing to food magazines, reading the work of philosophers, going to concerts, catching the latest movie and keeping up with the neighbors.
Sharon is survived by her children and their spouses: Stephen and LeeAnn Smelley, Nancy and Paul Almquist, Adam and Kristina Smelley. Additionally her grandkids and their partners: Dallas and Tyler Ross, Tim and Emma Almquist, Mark and Mackenzie Almquist-Murray, Elodee Smelley and Will Chapman, Andrew Almquist, Ghent Smelley and Sophia Smelley.
