Richard Berger

Born in Davenport, Iowa, Dick Berger died on July 14, 2012.  He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Ilo Kangur Berger, his son Christopher and his wife Robin, his son Andrew, of Portland; brothers Paul and Harold and sister Catherine Zumwalde of California and their families; in-laws Lembit Kangur and his wife Shirley of Albany, Robert Schumacher and Krista Schumacher of Springfield and their families. Also -- many friends in Portland, Corvallis, Redmond, Walla Walla and in the country of Estonia.


Dick graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Walla Walla and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Portland.  He enjoyed high school sports and served as director of several youth leagues for the Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis, in addition to coaching numerous teams.  He was an avid cyclist and rode in Europe, Cycle Oregon and the annual RAGBRAI ride in Iowa.  During retirement he had the opportunity to visit Germany, Ireland, Estonia, Great Britain, and Kauai.  He was also interested in literature and became an active member of a Multnomah County Library book club and attained his goal of reading all the Pulitzer Prize winners in fiction.


A memorial service will be held at Saint Clare Catholic Church, 8535 SW 19th Ave., Portland at 11:00 AM on­ July 21, 2012.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances will be accepted in Dick’s name to Saint Clare Catholic Church or Hospice Foundation of America, 1710 Rhode Island Avenue, NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC  20036.
