Shirley Ann Roberts

date of birth October 7 1935

date of death June 27 2013

Shirley Roberts was born in Modesto, CA and raised on her grandparents ranch in Waterford, CA.  She later moved to Stockton where she lived most of her life and raised 3 children,  Kathleen Maddox Smidt of Woodburn, OR; John DePew of Duvall, WA; and Carolynne “Dee Dee” DePew of Stockton, CA.   Shirley passed away suddenly in the hospital on June 27, 2013.  The last 12 years of her life were spent in Oregon with her oldest daughter; Kathleen, son-in-law, Terry Smidt and granddaughter, Alexis Griffin Smidt.  She enjoyed reading, crocheting, flowers, music, long car rides, and talking about her grandfather’s farm.  In addition to her family in Oregon, she is survived by 5 additional grandchildren, James Parker, Kami Griffin, Todd Pearson, Timothy “T.J.” Pearson and Sophia DePew. She is also survived by a brother, George E. Roberts of Juneau, AK and a sister, Dorritt Whitemore of Santa Rosa, CA.  Shirley was also proud to be a great grandmother of 14.

Shirley went back to school and became a CNA and continued to care for others for another 20 years.  She retired early due to knee issues. She had both knees replaced and later lost one leg due to an unrelated blood infection.  After recovering from the amputation and learning how to walk again her spirits soared and she made new friends.  For a short time she lived with them in an assisted living facility nearby.

A Celebration of Life/Memorial will be held  in Shirley’s honor on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 1:00 at her family’s home in Woodburn, OR (please email for directions) She would be happy to know that we all love her and want us to have this gathering of hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or National Kidney Foundation.
